"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."

***Head of School Update from BA Board Chair Cory Caron***

Dear BA Parents and Guardians:

Thank you for your patience as we search for a new Head of School at Bethlehem Academy. We were grateful to have the opportunity today to host a potential candidate for a visit/interview at Bethlehem Academy. The candidate toured the school, visited classrooms, and met with faculty, staff, and student leaders before sitting down for a formal interview with search committee members. Your continued prayers are appreciated as the search process continues.

Sincerely, Cory Caron, BA Board Chair

      **A Message from Mr. Wollersheim**

      Dear BA Students and Families,

As you most likely know by now, I have needed to take a medical leave from my position as Acting Principal of our school. You might remember that I started the year consulting for the school, after retiring last spring.  When the Principal position came open, early in the school year, and it became apparent a quick replacement might not be found, I stepped into the interim role, believing I could finish the school year.  Unfortunately, my health has deteriorated, and I have been advised to step away.  My symptoms are not life threatening, but could be if left unattended. I apologize to each of you, that I was not able to finish the year.

While I already said good-bye to the BA community last spring, when I announced my retirement, I wanted to thank all of you, one more time.

When I came to BA, just under six years ago, my goal was to serve this Catholic community.  It has been an honor to serve this school that was founded by the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa so many years ago. I have nothing but respect for the parents and community members who are committed to the school and its students.  Above the entrance to the school is the phrase, “The miracle is here.” It is you, the parents and supporters of the school that make that miracle happen every day. Thank you! Finally, I will so very much miss my interaction with the students of our school. They have truly been a blessing in my life the past several years. You will all remain in my prayers.

I want to thank you for your kindness and support over the years.  I will be watching BA and the places it goes moving forward.  I wish all of you my very best always.

May the peace of the Lord be with each of you.

      John Wollersheim

Students & staff wore purple today in a show of support for and to thank Mr. Wollersheim, a proud and die-hard St. Thomas grad!

      From BA Leadership:
Happy St. Patrick's Day weekend! As we approach the final week before spring break (March 25-April 1; school resumes Tuesday, April 2), we encourage you to keep Mr. Wollersheim in your prayers. Please reach out to
Mr. Friesen for high school issues, to Mr. Zabel for middle school issues, to Mrs. Sauer for administrative issues, and to Mr. Uphus for counseling, class registration or career/college issues. Not sure who to send something to? Email all of us at leadership@bacards.org and we will respond. We are committed to the mission of this school, and to partnering with you in providing a faith-based education for your scholar. Thank you for your grace and patience as we finish out the year and please continue to pray for a successful Head of School search!

Earlier today, we sent update on high school class registration and our college course policies. Click here for a copy of that email. A reminder that high school registration forms are due to Mr. Uphus by Friday, March 22.

Unfortunately, we haven't been able to go live yet with the PowerSchool Enrollment yet. We have one piece to the system that we’re still testing. We hope to go be able to send re-enrollment links very soon.

Did you send in an item for your student's homeroom silent auction basket? It's not too late to contribute! Send your item or $10 donation in to the BA front office. Click HERE to see the theme for each homeroom; please send this in by Friday, March 15.

We hope you'll get a chance to attend the DMCS Scholarship Gala tomorrow (Saturday, March 16); if not, please consider bidding on their silent auction items (click HERE) - all proceeds support students in need of scholarship support at DMCS.

      COMMUNITY INFORMATION

Health Community Initiative Topic for March: Talk to your teens about the risks associated with vaping.

Discuss how vaping can serve as an entry point to nicotine use, not an exit strategy. Although e-cigarettes* were created to help people with a nicotine addiction quit regular cigarettes, the FDA has NOT approved them as a quit smoking aid. In fact, among current e-cigarette users ages 18-24, 40% had never been cigarette smokers. E-cigarettes can lead to nicotine addiction just as regular cigarettes can. Vape fluid contains heavy metals like lead, tin, and nickel, and other substances that can harm the body and lungs.

*Vapes and e-cigarettes are the same thing, essentially. A vape is a type of e-cigarette in which the fluid containing nicotine is vaporized while being inhaled.

For more ways to talk with youth about how vaping nicotine compares to smoking cigarettes, visit bhthechange.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Electronic-Cigarettes-Infographic.pdf For resources on supporting your child in quitting vaping, visit mn.mylifemyquit.org/index

      Extended Absences/Family Trips

Parents/Guardians are required to communicate any planned student absence, with dates, to BA’s main office at least one week prior to a planned absence. This is especially true for family trips. Students taking trips outside BA’s scheduled days off must complete a class planned absence form prior to missing school. If a request is not made at least one week before the absence, teachers may not be able to provide make-up work in advance, and, sometimes, even with notice, advance work may not be available. Students are responsible for completing all work missed during their time out of school. Students are encouraged to check Schoology each day while out of school for additional information. Students should plan to talk directly with their teachers once they return to school, and plan to spend extra time to catch up after trips/vacations. Teachers will allow additional time for makeup work, within a reasonable time period.

The long Presidents' Day Weekend is upon us. A reminder there is NO SCHOOL tomorrow (Feb 16) or Monday (Feb 19). A reminder as well that Parent/Teacher Conferences have moved to March 6. Enjoy the long weekend!

This week has provided another reminder of the blessings of faith and the strength of our BA community. As you know, BA junior Evie Donahue was in a serious car accident this past weekend and this week, the Cardinal community rallied in support of Evie and her family. Intercultural Club donated the proceeds from their planned Tuesday bake sale, Student Council led a prayer service prior to the start of Ash Wednesday Mass for all involved, and today was a sea of blue as we held a dress down day. Through prayers, cards, meals, flowers, and $500 in proceeds, Cardinals have shared their love and support. We are pleased to share that Evie is now home from the hospital and is focused on getting back to full strength. Want to show your support in a more tangible way? The girls basketball team is selling a version of their "God gives his toughest battles to the strongest soldiers" team t-shirt, with all proceeds going to help all injured students. Click HERE to order the $20 t-shirt by Monday, February 19.

      February 9, 2024

      Dear BA Parents/Guardians:

The Lenten season begins with our celebration of Ash Wednesday Mass this Wednesday, February 14 at 10:30am. As we lean into the Lenten season, we focus on efforts to repent, reflect and restore with special prayers to start our day, a focus on Lenten activities in our Theology classrooms, and Stations of the Cross scheduled for the week of March 11. We encourage you to find time at home to reinforce these Lenten activities and offer Loyola Press's "8 Ways to Pray During Lent" as a resource to find more time for personal and family-centered prayer this season.

As the season of Lent commences, twelve high school students will be leaving next week for a 10-day mission trip to Jamaica in conjunction with Divine Mercy Catholic Church. Our 8th graders likewise leave Monday for several days at the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in Finland, MN, where they will focus their time on outdoor science-based activities and class bonding. Please pray for both groups to have a successful trip!

A few reminders: Presidents' Day Weekend starts Friday, with NO SCHOOL February 16 and Monday, February 19. Head of School Search: the position has been posted; please pray for committed, dedicated, experienced applicants! A reminder that Parent/Teacher Conferences will NOT be held in February. They have been rescheduled to March 6th. Just TWO WEEKS to submit by Feb 23 an application for tuition assistance and be  eligible for the most scholarships! Info on this and how to get your 2023 tax information below.

BABS/Financial Update: Homeroom teachers have begun speaking to your students about the BABS Silent Auction Homeroom Baskets. More information to follow. Save the date and plan to join us April 13th for BABS 2024, the 40th Anniversary Ruby Gala! This is our biggest night of celebration and fundraising in support of BA! February 2, 2024

      Dear BA Parents/Guardians:

What a fantastic Catholic Schools Week! We started the week crowning Bennett Wray-Raabolle our 2024 SnoBall Queen on Saturday; celebrated Mass Sunday at Divine Mercy Catholic Church; held a school-wide field trip day on Tuesday where our high school students helped pack 57,672 meals at Feed My Starving Children - enough to provide 158 children with a daily meal for a year; and Wednesday celebrated Mass with Archbishop Hebda where sophomore Andrew Volkmuth presented the Archbishop with an Intarsia cross (did you know we are the only high school in the state to offer this program?!?!). The Archbishop also spent time following Mass visiting classrooms and speaking with our students - all of whom spoke so eloquently and with gratitude for the opportunity to attend BA where they can live out and practice their faith. Thank you for your commitment to their Catholic, faith-centered education here at BA!

Congratulations to our band, choir, and fine arts student participating in this weekend's Gopher Conference Honors Fine Arts Program. Check out the band and choir concert and see our students' artwork at Kenyon-Wanamingo High School at 1pm tomorrow, Saturday, February 1. Best of luck and congratulations to all!

We look forward to opening our doors this weekend to prospective new students during our Winter Open House. Please let anyone you know who is thinking about Bethlehem Academy know that we will be here on Sunday from 11am-1pm to welcome them, answer questions, and give tours.

A few reminders: Counselor Day Monday! Please share your thanks with Mr. Uphus and Ms. Smith for all the work they do for our students; encourage your scholars to reach out as well! Parent/teacher conferences have been rescheduled to March 6th. Deacon Hjalmar will not be joining us at BA as previously reported, he has moved on to another opportunity in the Twin Cities. Find tuition assistance (applications received by Feb 23 are eligible for the most scholarships!) and 2023 tax information below. Appointment pickup - please go to Door C to pick up your student for appointments during the school day.
